Public Transit in Barbados - Gen info, System Map, Terminals

Public Transit

See heading "System Map" below for a higher resolution copy.

Public Transit Providers
They are two modes of Public Transit in Barbados. The first is the state owned Barbados Transport Board and the second is the privately owned Minibuses and Route Taxi (ZRs).

Vehicles

The vehicles used range from large un-articulated buses, to mid-size buses, to small buses to vans. Most vehilces were made by Toyota, Hino, Mercedes-Benz or BYD but some are made by Nissan and other auto manufacturers.

Barbados Transport Board

They operate omnibuses which are painted blue with yellow strips. These are larger in passenger holding capacity but are more infrequent. Due to this infrequency today they have only between 10% to 20% of the public transit market. The vehicles used by the Transport Board for public transit are from Mercedes-Benz (Brasil), Hino (Japan) and BYD (China). Mercedes-Benz buses were purchased between 1996 and 2007 and are automatic diesel. One bus was recently retro-fitted with an electric power motor and there are plans to add around another dozen. BYD buses were purchased in 2020, are automatic, electric, air-conditioned buses with wifi and usd ports. The Hino buses were purchased sometime before 2007 and are small manual diesel buses. Also see Transport Augmentation Programme (TAP)

Other Vehicles
The Transport Board also has other vehilces that are not used for public transit. These vehicles are used for internal purposes (as in transportation of staff) or transportation of disable people.

Mini-buses and Route Taxis (ZRs)

Mini-buses are yellow omnibuses with blue strips while  Route Taxis (ZRs) are white mini-vans with red strips. These are more frequent but have a lower capacity and as a result are frequently overcrowded especially ZRs. They together control between 80% to 90% of the market. Most minibuses are small buses, but a few are mid-size buses and others are not actually buses but vans.

Transport Augmentation Programme

The government of Barbados, in order to reduce a chronic deficit in existing fleets, recently entered into a partnership with some owners of vans and buses to allow them to provide services for the Transport Board . These vehicles are not painted like regular Transport Board vehicles but have a triangular sticker to the front, side and back with the Transport Board logo. They offer the same payment methods and the same concession to senior citizens and school students. They function the same as regular Transport Board buses and are suppose to follow the same Route.

Public Transit Apps
Apps are available but they are a few problems with them. Privately owned public transit operators do not follow a schedule and the state owned Transport Board does have a schedule but frequently has delays or no departures for particular times.

Getting Around
The public transit system is comprehensive, the Transport Board, together with the Minibuses and Route Taxis provide services to the entire island, from 5am to 12am, seven days a week. Note however there is reduced service on Sundays, and Monday-Saturdays after 6pm but you can still get around.
